Amazon.com Product Description
Redesigned with a precision unibody enclosure crafted from a single block of aluminum, the MacBook is thinner and lighter than its predecessor as well as stronger and more durable. But Apple didn't stop innovating with the body's design. The MacBook also includes a new 13.3-inch, LED-backlit glass display (instead of an LCD panel) and a glass trackpad that doesn't include a button (for larger tracking area) and features includes Apple's Multi-Touch technology.

The redesigned MacBook (see larger version).
Under the hood, the MacBook is powered by a powerful 2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor (with 3 MB L2 cache and 1066 MHz front-side bus), which runs applications faster and more efficiently as well as helps to reduce power requirements and save on battery life. And the MacBook features the integrated NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics processor, which delivers outstanding 3D game play with up to five times faster graphics performance than the previous generation.

It's pre-loaded with Apple's Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard operating system, which enables easy backup of your most important data via Time Machine, a redesigned desktop that helps eliminate clutter. It also comes with the iLife '08 suite of applications--including iPhoto, iMovie, Garageband, and iTunes--and the newest version of the fast-loading Safari web browser. Other hardware features include a 160 GB hard drive, 2 GB of installed RAM (which can be upgraded to 4 GB), an 8x combo Superdrive (for burning dual-layer DVDs as well as CDs), built-in Gigabit Ethernet for high-speed networking, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR (Enhanced Data Rate), and Mini DisplayPort video output (for DVI and VGA connections).

The New MacBook Design
Traditionally notebooks are made from multiple parts. With the new MacBook all of those parts with just one part--the breakthrough unibody enclosure. Every MacBook starts its life as a single block of aluminum, which is precisely machined into the basic unibody design. Another pass and the unibody takes shape. Another, and the integrated keyboard emerges. When you pick up a new MacBook you immediately notice the entire enclosure is thinner and lighter. And it feels strong and durable--perfect for life inside (and outside) your briefcase or backpack.

The standard aluminum electro-static trackpad has been replaced with a new glass Multi-Touch trackpad, which provides 40 percent more tracking area than before. Use two fingers to scroll up and down a page. Pinch to zoom in and out. Rotate an image with your fingertips. Swipe with three fingers to flip through your photo libraries. Swipe with four fingers to show your desktop, view all open windows, or switch applications. The entire trackpad surface is also a button, allowing you to both track and click virtually anywhere on the trackpad. And you can easily enable multiple virtual buttons in software, such as right-clicking.

The keyboard has also been improved, with the rigid aluminum keyboard webbing cut precisely to hold the keys, which are curved to perfectly fit fingers.

The 13.3-inch display is made of edge-to-edge, uninterrupted glass for a smooth, seamless surface and features LED backlighting for brilliant instant-on performance that uses up to 30 percent less energy than its predecessor. The ultra-thin displays provide crisp images and vivid colors which are ideal for viewing photos and movies

Intel Core 2 Duo Processor
Experience improved energy efficiency, expanded wireless connectivity, and amazing battery life with the 2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, which has a super-fast 1066 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and a large 3 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)

The new hafnium-infused circuitry--which reduces electrical current leakage in transistors--conserves even more energy, giving you more time away from the wall outlet. With 3 MB of shared L2 cache, data and instructions can be kept close to the two processor cores, greatly increasing performance and allowing the entire system to work more efficiently. And, because the processor cores share the L2 cache, either can use the entire amount if the other happens to be idle.

Video Processing & Output
The new MacBook uses a graphics processor that economizes space without sacrificing battery life. The NVIDIA GeForce 9400M is great for gaming, providing up to a 5x performance boost. Enjoy faster, smoother, more responsive gameplay as you power your way through the 3D environments of Quake, Call of Duty, and Spore. The 9400M graphics processor shares 256 MB of DDR3 SDRAM with main memory.

The MacBook includes a next generation Mini DisplayPort, which delivers a pure digital signal that can drive up to a 30-inch widescreen display. The Mini DisplayPort is ultra-compact at just 10 percent the size of a full DVI connector, and is compatible with Apple's 24-inch Cinema Display. Adapters are also available for using VGA, DVI/HDMI and Dual-Link DVI displays

Hard Drive and Memory
The 160 GB Serial-ATA (SATA) hard drive (5400 RPM) quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to FireWire and USB 2.0. The 2 GB of PC3-8500 DDR3 RAM (two SO-DIMMs of 1024 MB) has an industry-leading 1066 MHz speed, and the RAM capacity can be increased to 4 GB.

Wireless Connectivity
The built-in 802.11n wireless networking provides up to five times the performance and twice the range of 802.11g, but it's also backward-compatible with 802.11a/b/g routers, enabling you to communicate with the a wide variety of Wi-Fi resources. It works seamlessly with the new AirPort Extreme with 802.11n. Use the built-in Bluetooth wireless technology to connect to your PDA or cell phone, synchronize addresses, or download pictures from your cell phone. You can also use a wireless headset for iChat audio chats and VoIP calls as well as quickly share files with a colleague.

Video Conferencing with Built-in iSight
Artfully placed in the glass display is an iSight camera, which enables easy video conferencing as well as allows you to snap pictures of yourself and create video podcasts. Using the iChat AV application, video conferencing is integrated into your iChat buddy list, so initiating a video conference is a breeze. iChat also lets you hold audio chats with up to 10 people and provides high-quality audio compression and full-duplex sound so conversation can flow naturally. For video podcasting, you can record a short clip using the iSight camera, then use iWeb to create a video blog entry or post your GarageBand-recorded podcast.

I switched to Mac and all I got was this stupid smile5
I upgraded to a new Vista laptop last year, and have been unhappy and frustrated with it from the start. When my daughter's laptop died a horrible death, I really didn't want to go through the same Vista pains with her, so I decided to replace it with a Mac (it's going to be a Christmas present, so shhh!). As designated tech support for my family and friends, I started learning everything I could about Mac before she started asking questions. The more I learned about it, the more I wanted one for myself, and now that I have one, I am really kicking myself for not switching last year.

It's simply beautiful. I know it sounds like I drank the apple-flavored Kool-Aid, but the Macbook really is a marvel of elegant form and function. It feels solid and substantial, without being bulky and heavy. the aluminum design is a work of art, and I really appreciate all of the eco-friendly choices that were made regarding the components.

The LED screen is brighter and clearer than my old laptop's LCD screen. Looking at them side by side, the difference is amazing (and my old laptop was marketed as a potable entertainment PC, with an upgraded screen). I don't know what kind of LCD screens some of the other users have, but the Macbook screen is far superior to any notebook screen I've ever seen.

The back-lit keyboard is great - no more keyboard light needed. The keys have a solid feel to them, they're not mushy or noisy like some keyboards can be, they're just right, and the key layout is just like a full-size keyboard - no more hunting to figure out where the heck the backslash key is hidden or hitting the wrong key because your pinky slipped off of an undersized shift key.

I'll admit that I couldn't figure out the trackpad at first, but I felt like a dork once I realized how simple it is. I did change the settings so that I can tap to click in addition to pressing down on the trackpad (since that's what I'm used to). It's just incredibly easy once you get going. Swipe two fingers down the pad to scroll, swipe four for expose, tap with two fingers for secondary-click... it does more straight out of the box than my old highly-programed touch-pad. And after about an hour, the gestures become second-nature.

As far as the built-in speakers go, they're nicer than I expected, especially since I can't figure out how the heck they fit any speakers into such a tiny case. Seriously, it's like the whole case is the speaker. As I type this review, I'm listening to the album Paradise Lost by Symphony X and It sounds pretty good to me. of course, it sounds even better played through my Klipsch Room Groove, but um.. hey... they're integrated laptop speakers - though they are very nice ones.

They're are only two USB ports, but since the keyboard and trackpad are so functional, you won't need external input devices (though a number pad is a must for me when doing a lot of data-entry). I only use USB for external storage and synching my iPod, so it's not a problem for me (my iPod touch has a program that lets it act like a number pad when I need one). If I ever need more devices at once, I'll get a USB hub.

Now, it's confession time: As a Windows-centric IT Professional, I never liked Apple much, and I spent many years making fun of Mac and Mac users. When OS X came out, I couldn't justify further ridicule, so I just ignored Mac whenever the subject came up. After using Leopard for a short time, I can tell you that I don't have the appetite to eat the big heaping serving of humble pie that I'm owed. Leopard is slick and smooth and oh so fast. I'm truly enamored with iLife and iWork, and Time Machine is just about perfect (better than shadow copies, for the Windows guys and gals). It's packed with a lot of little things (like Spotlight and Preview) that are unobtrusive and helpful, which is a vast improvement over Vista's annoying and unhelpful features.

So, now I'm a happy convert. I still have two programs that are Windows-only (until I find replacements), and I still go back to my old (1 year old) laptop occasionally (for just the two, I don't want to bother with Boot Camp or Parallels). I hate going back to Vista after using my Macbook. Even though that laptop technically has higher RAM and processor specs than the Macbook, it's slow and clunky in comparison. I always sigh in relief when I can put it away again.

Bottom line: I love my Macbook and I wish I hadn't waited so long to make the switch. If you're worried about switching to Mac, visit an Apple Store - even if you have to make a day trip to get there, it will be worth it. Spend a little hands on time with the Macbook, and check out all the free classes the store offers. If you buy from the store, they will move your files from your old PC for you (for free). If all of that doesn't convince you, then come see me, and I'll offer you a tall, refreshing glass of Apple-flavored Kool-Aid. :-)

Windows to MAC and back again, a hobbits tale.4
So you have decided to buy a MAC to replace your windows laptop? Well I can tell you its easy to goto a MAC and still have windows apps running. Go buy VMWARE Fusion. This will allow you to use UNITY which can run any app in your windows vmware image inside your mac. =) thus bridging the gap between windows and mac.

Hardware wise this machine was lacking. GO SPEND THE MONEY on the 2.4ghz as you will get BACKLIT keyboard. instead of this one which you do not. Of cheap out like I did, and then go buy 4gb of memory from newegg . com for 120$ and a 320gb hdd for 90$. and have one hell of a macbook on the cheap.

I've had my 904HA for just over a month now and have taken it on vacation with me for Christmas. It's just the right size for keeping up with email and surfing from the couch in the evening. I replaced my Acer 14.1" laptop with this unit. I only have one complaint. It's taken me awhile to adjust to the half size right shift key. The up arrow/PgUp key shares the space below the Enter key. Other then that small glitch, I'm very pleased with this purchase. The chassis on this unit is the same as the 1000HA but with a 9.8" screen. The six cell battery easily lasts over 5 hours, which is the real reason I purchased this unit. I am sharing the HD with Windows XP & EeeBUNTU Linux. Runs nice & cool too. So far So good..!

Fast4
There are a lot netbook computers out there these days and most seem pretty similar, so probably many of them are good. I'm quite satisfied with the 904ha. The price is great and it is a lively performer. It boots up quickly and is generally fast. I think it is faster than my desktop computer with Vista and a quicker due core processor, but then again my biggest "wow" experience with Vista was when I learned it was incompatible with other hardware and software I had. I also have one of the smaller eee Pc models that I gave to my daughter, a 701. It is a bit smaller than the 904ha with the same dimensions as the 900 model, and the keyboard is definitely more cramped. I think you can get used to the smaller keyboard, but it would also take a little work. I suppose I also would avoid a netbook with Linux. Linux is a great operating system, and I wish there was a real competing operating system to the Windows monopoly, but Linux is hard to use unless you are more technically inclined. It is hard, that is, to install new programs on Linux unless you know what you are doing. I think the 904ha shares the same physical dimensions as the 1000 model, except the screen is smaller. The larger screen would be better, but the 8.9 inch screen on the 904ha is usable.

Does everything I need and more....5
I've toyed with getting one of these netbooks since they started showing up. I decided that this would be daddy's Christmas present.

Now I don't have to share the "family" machine with the kids anymore, and I can do what ever it is I need to do anywhere. I carry it everywhere and when a wireless connection isnt available I can hook up my cell and access email and the web at 3G speeds.

With the 160gb HD there is plenty of space to store what you need. It comes partitioned into two drives. I dont care for that so I downloaded a little utility (EASEUS Partition Manager 3.0) to remove the "d" drive and add the space to the "c" drive. Qick and easy, the machine will restart a couple of times so expect it.

I upgraded the ram to 2gb and had a very noticable increase in how fast programs started and things reacted. Make sure to disable the bootbooster in the bios before switching the ram or the machine wont see the extra gig.

The webcam is a cool little bonus and works pretty well.

I dont have any issues with the video. At this point everything has run smoothly. I even watch instant view movies on netflix on the web without any problems.

When I use "AutoPower Mode" and unplug the machine at 100% charge I get 6h39m of run time with the Wifi off and the screen brightness set to 50%, which is where I leave it. Surfing the net with Wifi on I get just over 5 hours of battery time. I did see where they are coming out with a 10600ma battery so with one of those who knows how long you can run. Recharge time is really fast as well.

I like this model for for the larger keyboard. I am a 4 fingered typer and it works great for me.

I dont have any complaints so far. It's a great little work horse. I have MS Office 2000 Pro on it and everything starts fast and runs smoothly. I runs as well as the duo core Compac 15.4" laptop I just bought the family for the living room. I could not be happier.

When I bought mine the 10" version was $104.00 more and in my mind not worth the money for an extra inch. Now they are about $55.00 more so you may want to consider that. I paid $353.98 for mine with the ram upgrade.

Buy one you'll love it.

Best Netbook5
Im a really educated buyer, i spend lots of time reading lots of review before I buy something. This netbook is the best that i could find, it has it all, the larger screen (1 inch more) it makes a huge difference. It has the same specs as all the other netbooks 1gb ram, 1.6 ghz atom, 160 gb hard drive, It also has bluetooth.

Plus it looks nicer, alot nicer my friends have the aspire one's and they want to take their minis back, i have seen the hp's the dells' and the acers, this one looks better.

It just looks more professional
BUY IT NOW!!!

Fantastic, almost perfect!5
I wish Amazon let me rate it 4.5 / 5 because that's what it should get.

I bought an Acer Aspire One recently, and was really disappointed in a few things with it. The keyboard was too small, the trackpad was ridiculously small and the track pad buttons we're even worse (being on the side).

Pros:

This Samsung is beautiful, almost perfect in my eyes. I'm getting a solid 6+ hours of usage out of it on a single charge. The screen is a beautiful hard-to-get matte finish, the case has a nice metallic shine to it. It's plently fast, boots very quick. The keyboard is fantastic. The overall finish to the whole product is SOLID and very clean. The inside of the display and around the keyboard is a fingerprint resistant matte finish. It also comes with almost zero bloat-ware. The only thing you really should uninstall is the McAffe antivirus software.

Cons (all minor):

1. I wish the outside case was more of a matte finish so it didn't attract fingerprints.

2. The trackpad could of been a tiny big bigger (there's more room between the trackpad and the keyboard, use it!)

3. The trackpad button is a rocker style, making right clicks kind of weird feeling the left side of the button raise up in the air.

4. It has an SD memory card reader, but where's the compact flash reader?

5. The power connector shouldn't stick straight out, it should have a 90 degree bend in it.

6. Why does the factory setup give you two partitions? I have a C and a D drive both around 70 megabytes in size. Not a huge problem, but annoying down the road if I'm splitting up data (e.g. music) across drives.

This is a fantastic machine, the cons I've listed are all very minor, and only what I'd change to make this the perfect netbook for me. It's substantially better than the Acer Aspire One in many ways, although it's also more expensive.

Highly recommended! Now we'll have to see how the reliability is of the hardware down the road (3 months, 6 months, 1 year).

Great Notebook5
Used to have a Macbook Pro, but I realized I did not really need a powerful computer for the work I was doing, and I view good battery life as an essential factor. This netbook is awesome, and I am usually getting anywhere between 5-7 hours depending on heavy or light usage. Screen size and keyboard takes about a day to get used to but otherwise I can see these netbooks as being the future in mobile computing.

It's All That I Expected5
I think we were all aware of the screen size when we bought our Acer One. That shouldn't really come as any surprise.

I value anyone's opinion, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder. What someone finds negative, another might not.

As to the fan issue, I have NOT noticed any noise, nor have I noticed any excessive heat issues. I've used the Acer at least 7 straight hours, downloading things and playing on the Internet, and I never encountered any overheating or noise.

This is a lightweight, portable computer, just what it's sold to be. If someone is expecting it to be their main computer, then they'll have to learn to live with the smaller screen size. Otherwise, it has the muscle of any other laptop - even has more GB than my Gateway Laptop.

I must admit that it is fun to play with, but I assumed it would be a great travel companion to watch movies, play games and get through a boring flight, and be able to connect to the Internet at the hotel. Even sign in to SW Airlines to get boarding passes in the "A" group.

My Acer is all that I hoped it would be.

Size Matters AGAIN (Darn It ANYWAY!)3

3.0 out of 5 stars So close,

See my review of Samsung NC10. I loved this but had real problems seeing type and took a lot of time adjusting font's to compensate. Then the fan noise got to me, the overheating and all the negative things so well spoken to here already. Terrible venting and cheap fan gives you a computer that runs HOT and a computer that needs the fan replace, SOON! Oh, but then you void your warranty when YOU install a quality fan.
No need for me to rehash the beaten to death negatives. The good points are NOT to be ignored either. It's just the difference in usability and comfort to the eyes on this screen verses a 10.2 inch screen has to be seen to be believed! Once you compare the two, you will never go with an 8.9" screen.....EVER! It took me less than 3 minutes to upgrade my RAM to 2 megs for under $30.00 and Samsung does NOT void my warranty.
If you really want a screen that is really very hard to see and a keyboard that's really hard to use with an 8.9" verses a 10 inch that solves so MANY problems, I recommend a different brand than this Acer. This Acer will both steal your heart but will more than likely BREAK it too. Too bad.......

I've Always Wanted a Mini-laptop5
This one didn't disappoint. In fact, it has more speed and power than my two-year old desktop. Easy to move around -- even considering other "regular-sized" lightweight laptops. Excellent machine.

Couldn't Be Better5
If I was allowed to have only one computer, it would be this one - Asus Eee PC 1000HA. Just owning this one small, cool running, computer; an external CD/DVD optical drive; a large external hard drive; and the HP All-in-One printer, I have all that I need. While all of my computers are each great for their special features, I don't need any of them. The Eee actually could handle all my computing needs.

I live near a Hot Spot Cafe so I can use their wireless unsecured connection to access the Internet for free. The Eee computer seeks out all the local wireless connections and hooks you up with your choice automatically. I downloaded all the upgrades for the operating system. I have always used 56K dial-up ISP connections. The wireless connection is really fast by comparison. Wow!

It seems like a miracle to me that so much computing power can be packaged in such a small light weight laptop - and the keyboard is almost standard size. With a battery that lasts more than five hours between charges; a fast, low power, (Atom) microprocessor; a large built-in Hard Drive; the XP operating system, and included programs; the built-in wireless network connection; three USB ports; memory card slot[ and all the other advanced features, at such a low price; I don't believe a computer buyer could possibly do better.

Good Little Computer5
This is a great little computer
160 GB HDD is great, i don't use a whole lot of stuff so it will last me for a long while
the screen is viewable from just about any conceivable angle which is great for watching videos, though do to it's size that's obviously not what it's intended use it
the key board is great, the right shift key, as every one says, is a little awkward but not that bad.
after i installed a fire wall it runs a little slower do to the use of RAM but it's not that bad
i think i get about 5-6 hours of battery life which is really nice for when i take it places,
it comes with a nice sleeve, i bought an padded case for it but don't use it because the sleeve that came with it is better
all in all a great little computer, even if you are going to be typing on it, and I've got fairly large hands

Good little notebook5
I bought this notebook (sub-notebook?) about a month ago and by and large am very happy with it. I loaded Ubuntu Linux 8.10 to have a dual-boot system and I must say it runs Linux very well -- no problems on the Linux side. It's pretty fast and I love the battery life. The only "con" is the keyboard. It has a good feel and I can type just as fast as on my old (now deceased) full-sized Dell. The biggest gripe is the placement of the right shift key, as many others have shared. I tried remapping the keyboard (under Linux) and it works but is probably not worth it. (If I remap on the Linux side, then I would have to figure out how to do it on the XP side.) I just don't see how such a lame arrangement got past the design people at ASUS. Right beside the up-arrow key is a half-key's worth of space which is NOT USED. Why couldn't they have enlarged the shift key using that space? Aside from that, I'm pleased. I had to buy a USB-to-parallel converter to use my old parallel-port printer, but that was cheap and works OK. I also bought a little USB mouse and use it all the time. All in all, I'd probably buy this model again.
